Stuffed Toys > Teddy Bears Find in this ring sites commercial, academic and/or personal pertaining to that childhood favorite out of love with which we somehow never did fall: the Teddy bear (as well as other stuffed/plush animals. A November 16, 1902 cartoon by Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post editorial cartoonist Clifford K. Berryman (April 2, 1869 - December 11, 1949) depicted President Theodore Roosevelt "drawing the line in Mississippi" at harming a small bear cub. (The President had recently been out hunting bear and after three days had not found any; his guides found an old bear for him and tied it to a tree, after their dogs had attacked and injured it, inviting the frustrated President to shoot. The President declined to harm the poor creature.) Not long after Berryman's cartoon appeared, Morris Michtom, a New York shopkeeper, took two bear toys his wife had created and featured them in his shop window, He named them "Teddy Bears," after the President. Thus the toy we know and love today was born!
