There are two living hippopotamus species today: hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius ) and pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis ). Hippos are a semi-aquatic animal but spend most of their time in the water. They even give birth under water. Hippos visit land about dusk to eat. If challenged, they can run up to 30 miles per hour.
