Railroads in the Adirondacks of New York State
New York Central Railroad tracks reached into the Adirondacks. One line even went across the Canadian border to Ottawa. Here's a timeline of railroads in the Adirondacks.
Poughkeepsie and Eastern Railroad at Poughkeepsie
Part of the The Central New England Railway (CNE) was the Poughkeepsie & Eastern (P&E). The name P&E did not actually last very long. It started out in 1872 as the P&E Railroad but the name was changed shortly to PH&B. A few years later it became the NY&M and then in 1893 it was changed back to P&E Railway. This was all the same railroad with different names. It was abandoned by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad.
The Put: New York Central's Putnam Division
When was "The Put" Abandoned? More History on "The Put" and some great New York Central pictures. Other Interesting Putnam Division Resources. Bike trails along railroads. Just Around the Corner by Bertrande H. Snell. The New York & Northern was leased to the New York Central in 1895. It became the Putnam Division.
ND&C CNE Railway between Pine Plains and Millerton
The Central New England Railway (CNE) / Newburgh, Dutchess and Connecticut Railroad between Pine Plains and Millerton over Winchell Mountain. This line was built by the Dutchess & Columbia Railroad in 1870-71.It was part of the ND&C RR from 1876 to 1905 when the CNE took over. From Shekomeko east to Millerton the line was abandoned by the CNE on 25 January 1925. From Shekomeko west to Pine Plains the line was abandoned by the New Haven on 21 October 1935.
The electric freight railroads of Connecticut
All about the electric freight railroads of New Haven and Bridgeport. Waterbury had electrics too. These cities were once the manufacturing center of New England and these railroads were very busy.
