Alternate history or alternative history is a subgenre of speculative fiction (or some would say of science fiction) that is set in a world in which history has diverged from history as it is generally known. Alternate history literature asks the question, "What if history had developed differently?" Most works in this genre are based in real historical events, yet feature social, geopolitical, or industrial circumstances that developed differently than our own. While to some extent all fiction can be described as "alternate history," the subgenre proper comprises fiction in which a change or point of divergence occurs in the past that causes human society to develop in a way that is distinct from our own.

2018 Winter Olympics: Nice, France
Nice, France launched a bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. Yes, the same Nice that is located on the French Riviera wants to host the Winter Games. I'm not sure how this would have worked, but watch this WebSite for progress. Yes, it makes a lot of sense: nearby snow, great airport, lots of Winter hotel rooms. But it never happened.
Joint Winter Olympics for Montreal and Lake Placid?
A news story stated that Montreal and Lake Placid officials met to consider a joint bid for the Winter Olympics. This could be great news for more railroads! Provide access to a wealth of railroad history information published over many years about the New York Central and about Montreal railroads.
What if the Penn Central Merger Did Not Happen
If, for several reasons, the merger of the New York Central Railroad, the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New Haven Railroad did not occur, how would railroading in the Eastern United States be different?
Troy & Schenectady Railroad, What if it Still Existed?
Let's assume that the Troy & Schenectady Railroad was not abandoned (which unfortunately it was). What would it be like today? What would the impact on our environment be?
