Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of GM is famous as a major US locomotive builder since the 1940's. Except for 2 demonstrators DH1 & DH2, the only real commercial small locomotive venture was the Model 40, introduced in 1940.

New York Central Railroad's Putnam Division
The New York & Northern was part of a Bronx to Boston route with the New York & New England Railroad via Danbury and Hartford. Financial failure forced the line to be leased to the New York Central in 1895. It became the Putnam Division.

Penn Central: A Wreck of a Railroad
Penn Central was formed in 1968 by the merger of the New York Central System into the Pennsylvania Railroad. To say the merger did not work was an understatement. Then along came the broken-down-already New Haven Railroad. In 1976, Conrail put PC out of its misery.

The Mighty O&W, New York City to the Great Lakes
The New York, Ontario & Western Railroad. It wound its way thru New York State and missed most of the population centers. It went away in 1957. Could it have survived? What happened to it?

NY Central Railroad's West Side Freight Line
The Hudson River Line opened in 1849. Below 30th Street, railroad cars drawn by horses funneled goods from the West Side railyards to Spring Street, with stops that today's subway riders will recognize: 23rd Street, 14th, Christopher. Steam engines replaced horses in 1867. 1934 saw the completion of the elevated West Side Freight Line. Decline and fall of the line in the 1960's to 1980's.
