Quarter horses have a history that started with the English Thoroughbreds brought here by the 1600 colonists. They crossed that horse with the American Indian horse called a Chickasaw horse. These horses were then bred with the mustangs as the settlers moved west in the United States. The breed was officially considered a horse breed in 1940.
