Guestbooks & Counters Are Here!
This month, we added two new highly requested widgets that you can add to your Webspace pages here on WebRing or on your site located elsewhere guestbooks and counters.

Guestbooks
To create one of multiple guestbooks, follow these instructions:

  1. Sign in, then go here or visit the Widgets screen of your My Account page.
  2. Click the "Add New" button.
  3. Configure your guestbook as you wish, then click the "Save Settings" button.
Now you're ready to add the guestbook to your site:
  1. Click the "Links Wizard" button.
  2. Click the "Grab" button found beside your preferred code.
  3. Copy all the code contained in the large text field. (In most cases, you should choose the JavaScript version.)
  4. Paste the code into the source code of the page of your choice.
Changing the look and size of your guestbook requires some HTML skills, but we have plans to simplify the process in the future.

To manage your guestbooks, go the same starting page and switch between the guestbooks you've created. The page will refresh and display all the posts your visitors have left. From there, you can Un-Hide (approve), Hide, and delete the individual posts.

If you need help with your guestbooks, make sure you are on one of the guestbook screens and click the "Help" link found in the top menu.

Counters
Additionally, you can now create and add counters to your webpages.

  1. Open the "Counter" tab of your Widgets screen found on your My Account page.
  2. Enter a "Counter Name."
  3. Enter a "Counter Value" if you wish to start your counter at a count greater than 0.
  4. Click the "change" button.
After you've created the counter, you will be presented with a piece of code. Simply copy the code and add it to your webpage's HTML.

The counter is simple text, so you will only see a number if you chose to show it to the public. You can format the code in the same way you would any text via your site's source code.

Ring Building Tips
Publisher Is the Answer
One of the most difficult aspects in building a WebRing Community can be finding contributors. Even more challenging is finding someone willing or capable of adding the NavBar to the most relevant page of their site.

Publisher to the Rescue!
Whenever a non-WebRing member attempts to join your ring, they are prompted to create a WebRing account. As part of the sign-up process, the new member is asked to submit the URL they wish to register. We have enhanced this ring join step to include the ability to create a page with Publisher.

Here's what happens if the new member opts to create a page for your ring:

  1. The new member is taken to the first page of the Publisher system. During this step, the member will enter a title and description for their new page.
  2. Next, the new member adds content to their new page.
  3. In the meantime, we automatically complete their application process and register their new URL.
Now, here's the best part — We automatically add the correct NavBar to the new page!

Although it's ideal to bring new sites into your ring, you should now have greater success in inviting new members to join your ring. Simply make sure to let the member know about Publisher as an option when you invite them.
