WebRing Announces...
Gearing up for Iron WebMaster
We're proud to announce the first in a series of competitions intended to spotlight the creativity and technical prowess of Web site designers the world over.

Iron WebMaster is a Web site design contest modeled after the hit TV show "Iron Chef." Like the TV show, contestants are given a theme that they must incorporate into their design. The competition consists of 5 rounds of increasing complexity. Prizes will be awarded throughout the competition at the end of each round, and a grand prize winner, the Iron WebMaster, crowned at the conclusion of all rounds.  Winners will be chosen by a combination of popular votes received from site visitors and a select panel of judges.

"We're very excited to be a part of this event," says Tim Killeen, President of WebRing, Inc.  "This should be fun for both competitors and visitors alike.  We see this as a great opportunity for aspiring web designers to showcase their creativity and gain exposure while having a little fun at the same time."

The Iron WebMaster competition begins early January 2008. Amateurs, professionals and aspiring Web designers alike are invited to compete for the title of Iron WebMaster.

Tech Tip
1 NavBar, Multiple Rings
When it comes to placing SSNB NavBars on your web page (URL), ONCE IS ENOUGH!

The SSNB is the version of the NavBar that we at WebRing prefer you to use. It is built with JavaScript, a dynamic programming language that allows us to update and track Web traffic from a distance. That means that once you've placed the SSNB NavBar on your site, you're done dealing with that infernal "code."

Once you've placed the SSNB NavBar on your URL, you'll just need to find some appropriate WebRing Communities to join. The following is an example of how one URL can effectively join multiple rings:
URL - http://mtflyfishn.com
Title - Montana Fly Fishing Co.
Description - Reeling up an assortment of fly fishing tours, guidebooks and gear in Montana since 1923.

  • 1st Ring - Montana Connection because the URL is from a Montana-based business.
  • 2nd Ring - Fly Fishing WebRing because the URL focuses on fly fishing.
  • 3rd Ring - American Outdoors because both Montana and fly fishing resonate with the spirit of the American outdoors.

Notice how one NavBar does the work of several rings. That's the way the SSNB is meant to work. So if you've already placed the NavBar on your URL, you only need to submit your URL and wait for approval.

Which brings us to some exciting news for those frustrated over the slow turnaround time on pending submissions and poor quality rings: Community WebRings!

Many rings (some are excluded) are now configured to allow members to process new submissions, as well as suspend and activate sites. Go to one of the rings you belong to and have a look around. Participate in the communities you are a part of!

Back to NavBars... Here are a few common mistakes you'll want to avoid:

    • Placing new NavBars for each Community membership - Most Ring Managers will instruct you to place their Community-specific NavBar on your URL in order for your submission to be approved. If you have already placed the SSNB NavBar on your URL, disregard their instruction and do NOT place any more code on your site. They will see their banner when they check out your site before approving your URL.
    • Creating a new WebRing Account - It's not uncommon for someone to create a new account every time they want to join a different Community. This generally creates confusion for all involved, typically in the form of system-generated emails that claim your URL is "missing navigation code."
    • Joining WebRing Communities that are too similar - When choosing additional WebRing Communities to join, ask yourself if the Community in question is different enough from the ones you already belong to.

  • WebRing Supports

    Donate
Blood
In response to the general shortage during the winter months, January is Volunteer Blood Donor Month.

If you are of age, at least 110 pounds and in good health, consider giving blood through your local chapter of the Red Cross. With each donation, you will help save a life somewhere around the world.

To learn more about how you can donate blood or to host your own blood drive, read this article from the American National Red Cross.
