Setting Up Alerts Tutorial
Welcome to the tutorial for setting up your Comm Center's Alerts. This project is still in Alpha mode, which means we're still working out some of the kinks. Thanks for helping us test out the Alerts!

If you're ready, we will now walk you through the set up process.

Preliminary Steps
Before you get started, you need to make sure that the following has been done:

  • Set your general Account Settings to allow for "Email Notification." Remember to click "I agree. Change my info." before moving to the next step.
  • We also suggest configuring your WR Messages so that all WebRing correspondence goes to you WRMail account. This prevents important notices from being lost, going to bulk folders, etc. Allow the new alert system to notify you at your external email (or mobile phone) when important notices require your attention and you are not currently on the WebRing site.
  • Upgrade your Comm Center by visiting your Edit Profile page. Once open, click on "Profile and Alert Settings" in Edit Profile and Alert Settings. Your Comm Center is now upgraded and you're ready to set your Alerts.

Setting Alerts
Once you've opened the "settings" section of the Comm Center, you should see a page that looks like this:

1. Click on the "edit your PROFILE & ALERT settings" link. Your Comm Center should now look like this:

2. Choose your settings accordingly. Here's a glossary of the settings you need to adjust in order to receive Alerts: that details what each setting will do if chosen.

    A - Email
    Enter your email address for where you would like to receive your Alerts. If you leave this field blank, you will not receive Alerts in your external email account.

    B - Mobile Phone
    To receive your Alerts via text message (SMS), you need to have a mobile cell phone registered. If you see your cell number, then you're all set. If not, click the "Register your phone" link.

    C - Important Alerts
    Choose your preference from the dropdown menu:

    • Alert me by texting me - If selected, you will have Alerts sent to your cell phone.
    • Alert to external email - If selected, you will have Alerts sent to your external email. Don't forget to enter your email address in the "Email:" field above, and to set your Account Settings to allow sending of notifications.
    • Nothing special, WR Message is fine. - This is the best way to stop receiving any Shoutbox alerts.

    D - Notify Me
    Choose your preference from the dropdown menu:

    • Midnight (Pacific) - If selected, Alerts will be sent at 12:00 AM Pacific Standard Time.
    • 6 AM (Pacific) - If selected, Alerts will be sent at 6:00 AM Pacific Standard Time.
    • Noon (Pacific) - If selected, Alerts will be sent at 12:00 PM Pacific Standard Time.
    • 6 PM (Pacific) - If selected, Alerts will be sent at 6:00 PM Pacific Standard Time.
    • Immediately - If selected, Alerts will be sent in seconds!

    E - What's Important
    Choose the Alerts that you would like to receive at the times designated in "Notify Me."

    • New private messages when I'm offline - If selected, you will be alerted when someone sends you a private message.
    • New submissions to rings I manage - If selected, you will be alerted anytime someone submits a site to your ring.
    • "Manage Ring" warnings - If selected, you will be alerted anytime your ring(s) needs managing.
    • Newsletter- If selected, you will be alerted anytime we post the latest WebRing Newsletter.
    • WebRing announcements - If selected, you will be alerted anytime we make a special announcement.
    • Auction notices - If selected, you will be alerted anytime another member has outbid you in Auction Central.

3. Click the "Save Settings" button once you've finished!

At the time of this post, the two most relevant Alerts are "New submissions to rings I manage" and "Auction notices."
