Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. - Phil 1:1-5 An important thing to know about a letter is who wrote it and who it is written to. That is true for Philippians as well. The author of Philippians is universally agreed by scholars to be the apostle Paul. No doubt, Paul puts this greeting at the beginning to let people know who wrote the letter. But let's talk about who it is that Paul is writing to. Philippi is a city in the northern part of modern Greece. They didn't have a debt problem in Greece back then, Philippi was a wealthy city and a Roman colony. Paul was introduced to the Philippians when he was on his second missionary journey about A.D. 52. He was set up in Ephesus and had plans to go on a missionary journey to the northern part of Asia Minor, modern day Turkey. In Acts 16, it says the Holy Spirit prevented Paul from doing so, rather he dreamed about a man in Macedonia who was asking for help. This dream is commonly referred to as the Macedonian call, and is used by missionaries to represent their calling into the mission field.
