A List of Do's and Don't's? - 06/14/2013

Eph 5:1-2 My tendency is to reduce my life to a list of do's and don't's. That is, I want to be a good person and do what I'm supposed to do. So tend I get my value from my successes and beat myself up for my failures. I've recently gone through a period of spiritual drought. I was going through the motions. I was doing the right things, or at least as much as I could handle. But the energy, the tenacity, the enthusiasm was missing. I was tired and burned out. But there was nothing I could quit. You can't leave the responsibilities of being a husband, father, etc. Well, I guess you can, but I had no desire to. At the end of the spiritual drought, I contemplated a saying by C.S. Lewis I found on twitter, "He will be infinitely merciful to our repeated failures; I know no promise that He will accept a deliberate compromise." The question came into my head, "Am I giving God all that I have, or am I compromising?", followed by, "Is that forgivable?" You see, it is easy to get distracted from what God calls us to do and do what we "want to" or what we "have to" do instead. I realized I had been forgetting God and my sin, having been pointed out by God, was square in front of me. The answer to the question, "Is that forgivable?" is yes.
