Old Time Victorian Boobage - 03/10/2013

Many fashion histories will claim that the bra was invented in 1913 by Mary Phelps Jacob. (Or, less reliably, you might come upon one of those sources that wasn't in on the joke when someone claimed that it was invented by a man with the obvious gag of a name, Otto Titzling.)  However, as the image at right from 1900 shows, the history of the garment goes back further than that. Various types of bras have been created by women who had need of them throughout the ages. I remember a book from the 1600s that included a technique to fix sagging breasts, which involved making little cloth "caps" to cover the breasts which were supported with ribbons (and then a certain ointment applied to the breasts before stuffing them into their little hats, and then some kind of instructions to expose them to moonlight when possible, but whatevs.)  Interestingly, Victorian style bras were often created more for the sake of flattening the breasts and creating the desirable monobosom effect , or else reducing the ability to glimpse any unsightly nippelage. Jacob's design was apparently innovative for being made of less material so that it wouldn't peek out over the increasingly skimpy evening gowns the way corsets were doing.  Marquis.de has a pattern for making your own 1908 style bra ( back , front and the pad .)
