Federal Land Patents offer genealogical researchers a source of information on the initial transfer of land titles from the US Federal government to individuals. In addition to verifying title transfer, this information will allow the researcher to associate an individual (Patentee, Assignee, Warrantee, Widow, or Heir) with a specific location (Legal Land Description) and time (Issue Date). The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), General Land Office (GLO) Records Automation web site ( ) has a variety of Land Patents, including Cash Entry, Homestead and Military Warrant patents. They provide live access to Federal land conveyance records for the Public Land States, including image access to more than five million Federal land title records issued between 1820 and the present. Below is the land patent for an area of 194.04 acres of land in Golconda, Illinois, USA which was bought by my wife's 1st cousin 6 times removed, William Rondeau on 24 April 1820 at the Shawneetown land office. This piece of land is identified in terms of its aliquot (N1/2), township (13S), range (7E), meridian (3rd PM), and section (19).   Survey plats are part of the official record of a cadastral survey. Cadastral surveys document the boundaries of land ownership, by the production of documents, diagrams, sketches, plans (plats in USA), charts, and maps.
